This Pride Month, Charter Bermondsey has embodied the “Rise up: Pride in Protest!” theme, fostering empathy, allyship, and a deep sense of belonging for all.
In English, students analysed Stonewall Riot accounts and wrote from a 1960s journalist’s perspective, while Spanish and French classes learned the language of protest. Religious Studies explored diverse scriptural interpretations on LGBTQ+ issues and the evolving attitudes of religious communities. History delved into Alan Turing’s World War II contributions and the historical control over sexuality in the Middle Ages.
Beyond the classroom, our computing students took part in a competition to redesign the school logo for Pride. Weibeau’s winning entry captures this wonderfully!
Fostering allyship has been a focus this month with both staff and students connecting with Mosaic, a local LGBTQ+ charity. Klara from Mosaic led an inspiring assembly and continues to engage directly with pupils through weekly visits.
Charter Bermondsey is proud to champion an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, understood, and empowered.

The Charter School Bermondsey has soared in the recently published Fairer School Index, ranking among the top 6% of over 3,000 schools nationally.
The results, revealed exclusively by the Mirror, show the schools beating the odds to make the most significant positive impact on pupils. This groundbreaking index, devised by Prof George Leckie of the University of Bristol, goes beyond traditional league tables by considering socio-economic factors, including the number of pupils receiving free school meals.
“Schools that beat the odds stacked against their pupils should be recognised as being high performing.” Henri Murison, CEO Northern Powerhouse Partnership
The Charter School Bermondsey delivers strong academic results, with recent Progress 8 scores of +0.08 and +0.29 exceeding national averages. The Fairer Schools’ Index shows just how impressive these outcomes are.
“This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire school community. We are committed to allowing every student to succeed, regardless of background.” Principal, Marcus Huntley
“We are thrilled to see our school recognised for its outstanding work. This achievement reinforces our belief in the transformative power of education in creating better futures for all students.” CEO of The Charter Schools’ Educational Trust, Cassie Buchanan
The Charter School Bermondsey’s success demonstrates that dedication, hard work, and a focus on equity can overcome challenges and build better futures for young people.
The school is a member of The Charter Schools Educational Trust; home to nine Good and Outstanding schools including The Charter School North Dulwich, The Charter School East Dulwich & Charles Dickens Primary School.

Charter Bermondsey School is embarking on an exciting new chapter with the announcement of its participation in the prestigious Andrew Lloyd Webber Music in Secondary Schools’ Trust (MiSST) programme and a generous sponsorship from property developer Greystar, who are delivering the neighbouring Bermondsey Project development.
Starting in September 2024, every Year 7 student at Charter Bermondsey will receive their own instrument and embark on a three-year musical journey as part of the MiSST curriculum. This rigorous programme, renowned for producing exceptional musicians, will equip students with the skills and confidence to excel in music GCSE, A-Level, and beyond.
To complement the MiSST curriculum, Greystar’s generous donation will fund additional one-to-one and small-group instrument lessons, providing even more students with the opportunity to develop their musical talents.
“We are thrilled to be joining the MiSST program and to have the support of Greystar,” said Marcus Huntley. “This is a transformative moment for our school. Music has the power to inspire, unite, and enrich lives, and we are excited to see the positive impact this initiative will have on our students.”
Greystar’s investment in Charter Bermondsey underscores its commitment to the local community.
“We believe in the power of music to transform lives,” said Bronwyn Jones, Greystar Development Director. “We are proud to support Charter Bermondsey and look forward to hearing the beautiful music created by these talented young people.”
The music lessons will commence in September 2024.

The Charter School Bermondsey is celebrating a year of academic achievement, culminating in impressive GCSE results. Among the highlights, Head Girl Greta has secured a remarkable 9 grade 9s.
Having joined the school in Year 7 with limited English proficiency, Greta’s journey is a remarkable example of perseverance and academic growth. With the support of her teachers and classmates, she not only overcame language barriers but also excelled in subjects like History, earning a grade 9 and the prestigious Worshipful Company of Curriers’ History Essay Prize awarded by the Lord Mayor.
“This achievement feels surreal,” Greta said. “When I first started, I lacked confidence in my abilities, but the support from my school community was instrumental in helping me reach this point. I’m excited to start A Levels in History, English, and Politics at London Academy of Excellence, and aspire to study History at Oxford University.”
Greta’s achievement is just one of many success stories at Charter Bermondsey. Head Boy Mahboud earned 8 grade 9s, while Godsfavour and Eden each achieved 5 grade 9s.
There was more good news for Godsfavour, Greta, and Mahboud, who achieved 9s in GCSE Mathematics and claimed grades A,B, and B, respectively, in the Additional Mathematics qualification, a stepping stone between GCSE and A Level.
Several students will progress to apprenticeships this year. Alex and Freddie bagged a suite of GCSE passes and look forward to their apprenticeships in plumbing at Lewisham College.
“I’m incredibly proud of our pupils’ achievements. Despite the challenges of a busy year, they have maintained and even surpassed last year’s excellent results. Their dedication and hard work are truly inspiring and mean they can progress to some of the most competitive 6th form centres in London.” Principal Marcus Huntley

Counsellor Jasmine Ali was present to enjoy the celebrations at Charter Bermondsey. She said:
“I’m delighted to hear that, once again, Southwark Schools are set to buck the National trend with exceptional GCSEs. I want to say how proud I am of the fantastic students, parents, carers and their fantastic teachers. It has been a pleasure to be at The Charter School Bermondsey for the occasion and see the difference our schools are making first-hand.”
